Low-profile judge leads probe back to Thaksin

Nam Yimyaem, 69, has burst into the spotlight since an investigative panel he chaired recommended that the Election Commission charge caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra with hiring small parties to contest in the April 2 election.
Nam, a retired vice president of the Supreme Court, was handpicked by Vasana Puemlarp last month to chair the panel set up to look into complaints filed by Democrat Party secretary-general Suthep Thaugsuban against the ruling Thai Rak Thai Party. Before finalising the report, which found the ruling party guilty, his investigative panel recommended that the EC dissolve the Thai Ground Party and Pattana Chat Thai Party. Both parties were subsequently dissolved. Nam has been an adviser to the EC's investigative team for several years. His low profile has kept him free from political pressure. He is close to privy councillor and former Supreme Court chief justice Santi Thakran.
