19 injured in gas explosion

A gas explosion in a tunnel on Rama II road in Bangkok's Takam district late yesterday injured 19 workers, nine of them seriously.

The blast occurred at about 6pm in a tunnel being used by the Metropolitan Water Authority to construct new water pipelines.

Police said there was a smell of gas at the scene and late last night it was still unclear whether the workers were injured by the explosion or from inhaling the gas.

One worker, Watcharapong Worapat, said the explosion occurred when most people on the site had stopped for a break.
