Sirimongkol withdraws

[BOXING] Three-time world boxing title holder Sirimongkol Singwangcha of Thailand has withdrawn from the interim WBC world lightweight title contest in Los Angeles on May 20.

Sirimongkol's management said the Thai superstar had sustained an injury while training and medical advice said he was not fit to fight.

The scheduled interim title contest - matching Sirimongkol with Japan's Chikashi Inada - resulted after a controversy surrounding the two top contenders fighting in the division - Diego Chico Corrales and Jose Luis Castillo - being unable to box for the official title because of weight disputes.

WBC president Dr Jose Sulaiman said Inada, ranked No 3, would now fight Armando Santa Cruz, ranked No 4. Sirimonkol would challenge the winner.

Meanwhile, Thailand's Wandee Singwancha, ranked No 2, and the Philippines' Juanito Rubillar, ranked No 1, are set for an interim light flyweight championship at the Elorde Sports Centre in Manila most likely on June 22.
