Pregnant elephant dies

A 40-year-old elephant, Kamsri, died yesterday with her unborn calf inside her womb.

The elephant from Chiang Mai was sent to an elephant hospital in Hang Chat district on Saturday with pus and bleeding from her vagina. Despite medical assistance and close medical supervision, Kamsri succumbed at about 12.40pm yesterday.

Soraida Salwala, secretary general of Friends of the Asian Elephant (FAE), said an autopsy would be conducted to determine the exact cause of Kamsri's death.

The elephant hospital's director Preecha Puangkha, a veterinarian, said most pregnant elephants tend to develop critical problems when injured. According to the elephant owner Somsak Kobkutham, another elephant crashed into Kamsri shortly before she was expected to deliver her calf last month.
