Independent body needed to amend Constitution, says Snoh

Snoh Thienthong, a co-founder of the Thai Rak Thai Party, yesterday urged the three top courts to appoint an independent body to amend the Constitution in order to break the country's political deadlock.
Now the leader of the Pracharaj Party, Snoh said a Constitution amendment is needed because the deadlines as stipulated in the Constitution have not been met. For instance, there had not been a House session within the 30 days following election day and no House quorum. To proceed with political reform, the courts should appoint a neutral body to rewrite the Constitution. "We must solve all the deadlocks by amending the Constitution, even if it runs against the Constitution [ethos],'' he said. He questioned why Chidchai Vanasatidya, who is not an elected MP, was appointed acting caretaker prime minister when the Constitution stipulates that a prime minister must be an elected MP. He said his party was ready to run in the next general election. And if the article in Constitution that requires MP candidates to be members of their political party for 90 days, more Thai Rak Thai MPs would defect to his party, Snoh said. He said he would invite former minister Purachai Piumsombun to join his party. "I may go to talk to him any day now. I will tell him the country is in crisis and if he would help rescue it,'' he said. He denied he had invited Auditor-General Khunying Jaruvan Maintaka to join his party saying she still serves the country on an independent body. He may approach her after she retires, he said.
