Caravan, PAD clash at EC office

More than 30 members of the Caravan of the Poor yesterday confronted People's Alliance for Democracy representatives as they voiced support for the embattled Election Commission.

The Caravan, led by Khamta Kaenbunjan and Atthawit Sing-kor, came to the EC's offices to support the commissioners whose resignations are being called for by many observers.

They handed flowers to EC secretary-general Ekkachai Warun-prapha, who welcomed them.

Anyone who objected to the April 2 election was an opponent of democracy, the Caravan claimed.

During their visit, Caravan members had a dispute with PAD activists protesting outside the building and tried to pull down anti-government banners.

PAD demonstrators were heard shouting: "Go back to your farms!"

There was another confron-tation when Caravan members saw an anti-EC banner in the window of the TOT office near the EC headquarters and abused office staff.

"Is Sondhi [Limthongkul] your husband? Why do you believe him? Are you stupid?" they cried.

Police at the building did little to restrain the Caravan protest.
