Non-tuition fees to increase

The Education Ministry's Private Education Commission yesterday approved a request by private vocational schools at all levels that all non-tuition student fees be doubled in the wake of soaring oil prices.

A meeting between ministry officials and school-owners at higher diploma level will be convened next week to discuss the latters' request to raise the ceiling from Bt20,000, which has been in effect since 1997, to Bt40,000.

The non-tuition fees include lunches, school-bus trips, entry fees, damage warranty, swimming and musical classes and any other similar non-mandatory fees.

Tuition fees at all private vocational schools will remain the same.

Detailed regulations on fees relating to oil prices will be worked out later, said Permanent Secretary Kasama Worrawan na Ayutthaya, who chaired yesterday's meeting.
