Opposition parties back in the running

Opposition leaders yesterday agreed to contest the next general election and act in line with any solutions suggested by the relevant courts, in a bid to ease the current political crisis.
The move was in response to advice given by His Majesty the King to Administrative Court and Supreme Court judges on Tuesday. Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said the three opposition parties welcomed the royal advice and would cooperate in any way they could. The presidents of the Supreme Administrative, Constitution and Supreme courts are scheduled to meet tomorrow in a bid to find a solution to what His Majesty called "a mess". Earlier, the Democrat leader said the party would take part in the next general election if the involvement of all the former opposition parties was among the suggested solutions. Abhisit, Chat Thai's Banharn Silapa-archa, and Sanan Kachornprasart from the Mahachon Party met in the afternoon at a Bangkok restaurant to discuss the matter. The three parties boycotted the April 2 election. Meanwhile, People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) spokesman Suriyasai Katasila yesterday said he humbly accepted His Majesty the King's speech, especially his rejection of the group's push for a royally appointed prime minister. The King said on Tuesday night that it was undemocratic and a misrepresentation of the Constitution to cite Article 7 when asking him to appoint a premier.
