Scrap third round and await courts' decision says P-Net

The People's Network for Election (P-Net) yesterday urged the Election Commission (EC) to cancel the third round of elections in the South in the constituencies where single candidates had failed twice to win the minimum required votes.

The election is scheduled for Saturday.

P-Net also called on the EC not to endorse any successful candidates from the second round of voting before the Kingdom's three main courts rule on whether the April 2 election should be scrapped.

The statement was issued in response to His Majesty the King's message that the Administrative and Supreme courts should explore legal solutions to get the country out of the current "political mess".

His Majesty condemned the lone-candidate elections as "undemocratic".

The Constitution Court is also expected to be involved in the decision.

Following Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's abrupt decision to dissolve Parliament, the opposition parties refused to contest the election, leaving many constituencies with only Thai Rak Thai Party candidates.

P-Net yesterday said the EC should take responsibility if the three courts nullified the vote as a result of its faults, including the arrangement of the polling booths in a way that allowed others to observe how people were voting. However, the group added the government should take responsibility if the three courts overruled the election because the dissolution was taken under unreasonable grounds.

The P-Net urged the Office of Ombudsman to show courage by forwarding the petition to the Constitution Court, asking the judiciary to rule the election unconstitutional. The group said if the election was scrapped, all parties should discuss how to implement political reforms before another vote is held.

"Reliable neutral organisations should be entrusted to organise the next election," P-Net added.

In a related development, many academics urged the EC commissioners to resign if the courts overturned the election.
