Thai Rak Thai Party deputy leader Yaowapha Wongsawat yesterday threatened to sue Democrat Party executive Alongkorn Pollabutr for linking her to a controversial real estate development.
Alongkorn alleged that Yaowapha had gained unusual wealth via a housing estate transaction using her two daughters as nominees. "I deny every fabricated charge," Yaowapha said. She said Alongkorn tried to frame her as part of the political scam to discredit her elder brother, outgoing Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. She said she served as an MP and had no government position to use as a springboard to solicit illicit gains. She added her daughters were of legal age and entitled to run their own businesses. Her lawyer Somsak Toraksa said Alongkorn had smeared his client without sufficient evidence to back the allegations. Somsak said, according to news reports, Alongkorn claimed he was preparing to petition for a graft investigation against Yaowapha. Under the anti-graft law, the National Counter Corruption Commission is empowered to investigate the abuse of power or illicit gains if there is sufficient evidence. Alongkorn failed, however, to outline the details linking Yaowapha to the deal, Somsak said.
