IN BRIEF
rice

Thailand hangs on to title as world's top exporter, but Vietnam closes in Thailand maintained its status as the world's top rice exporter in the first quarter, shipping 1.79 million tonnes of rice valued at Bt22.64 billion, the foreign trade department announced yesterday.

Rachane Potjanasuntorn, director-general of the department, said the average export price was US$317 (Bt11,921) per tonne. The department is confident that rice exports will meet its target of 7.5 million tonnes this year, Rachane said.

Despite high exports, the department noted that Vietnam is closing in on Thailand and could surpass the Kingdom to take the top rice-exporting spot in the near future.

Currently, the world's number two rice exporter, Vietnam's export target is 5 million tonnes this year. It exported 1.1 million tonnes in the first quarter of this year. - The Nation.
