Motorcycle taxis seek rise

In the face of rising petrol prices, about 100 motorcycle taxi drivers in this northeastern province plan to obtain permission from the provincial transport office to increase the minimum fare from Bt25 to Bt30.

Somnuk Kerdchuen, who heads a motorcycle-taxi stand, yesterday said petrol costs have risen from Bt60 to Bt100 a day.

"Without a rise in fares, our livelihood will suffer," he said.

The minimum fare covers a trip under two kilometres.

Somnuk said motorcycle taxis did not want to raise fares as they feared passengers would turn to cheaper forms of transport like buses.
