Thaksin takes refuge in UK

Caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said yesterday he would take a vacation in England next week.
"I am going to England and will be there for many days," he told reporters before playing a round of golf with leading Thai Rak Thai members. "I will travel all over the world, now that I am jobless," he said.Thaksin, 56, announced he would step aside as premier despite his party's victory in last Sunday's election. His announcement came just hours after he was granted an audience with His Majesty the King. Thaksin, who remains party leader and an MP, refused to comment on demands from opponents that he leave politics altogether or on who may succeed him. "I don't know anything about politics," he quipped. Thaksin said he would cast his vote in advance on April 13 or 14 for the April 19 Senate election before leaving for England, where one of his daughters is enrolled in a graduate programme. He said he intended to see some World Cup football matches when the event is held in Germany in June. The Nation
