Giant hail wreaks havoc

A hailstorm on Friday night hit a village in Sa Kaew's Aranyaprathet district, causing an estimated Bt300,000 in damage and leaving 30 houses in need of repair.

Jirawat Singdee, Aranyaprathet district chief, said some houses lost their roofs during the threehour storm that hit Prasongsuk village at about 7pm.

The storm also knocked down electricity pylons in the village causing a power blackout throughout the night and big trees blocked some roads, including those at the entrance of the village.

Jirawat, who visited the village with relief officials, said: "The hailstorm damaged about 30 houses, of which 10 were destroyed and are uninhabitable."

A villager, Lamun Kongparn, 68, said she had never experienced such an intense hailstorm. "The hail was so densely that the sky was all white. The storm became a cyclone and blew away the roof of my houses. I had to rescue my grandsons," she said.

She said the hail was thumbsized.
