TRT bigwigs coy over top job

Somkid Jatusripitak and Bhokin Bhalakula, identified as leading contenders for the post of prime minister, yesterday side-stepped questions about a possible change in their political fortunes.

"Thai Rak Thai is a big party with many senior figures and it is the matter for the party to choose the next leader," Somkid said.

He praised outgoing Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra for not accepting a third term, saying the decision was a great sacrifice made to forge national reconciliation.

Somkid declined to comment on whether Thaksin had approached him as a potential successor.

Asked if he was ready for the position of prime minister, Bhokin said Somkid and deputy party leader Khunying Sudarat Keyuraphan were more suitable for the top job.

"The party has many suitable candidates," he said.
