A declaration for the people

Four media groups yesterday released a 13-point declaration condemning the intimidation of members of the Thai press.

The declaration denounced the barricading of the Nation Multimedia Group and the violent protest at Manager Daily by pro-government mobs as well as mob attacks on reporters in Chiang Mai and Saraburi.

The Thai Journalists' Association, the Economic Reporters' Association, the Confederation of Thai Journalists and the Thai Broadcast Journalists' Association released the declaration. It was signed by hundreds of reporters and editorial staff from a variety of news organisations who gathered at the Thai Journalists' Association in a show of unity.

The reporters demanded an immediate halt to all types of intimidation against members of the media and pledged to work professionally.

The declaration also raised questions about who controlled the pro-government mobs, suggesting they may have been manipulated by individuals in political power, which it said violated the Constitution and criminal law. The statement also decried the numerous criminal and civil lawsuits and libel charges filed against journalists by those in power.

The reporters called for the government to implement concrete measures to protect members of the media in accordance with Article 39 of the Constitution. They also called for immediate and transparent political reform following Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's self-imposed break from politics.

The declaration's motto is: "The freedom of the press and the freedom of the people. Intimidating the press is intimidating the people and the democracy."

Reporters reaffirmed their commitment to professionalism, upholding ethics and taking responsibility for any mistakes made.
