Violence continued in the south

Yala - Two men were shot dead and three were injured in the South late Sunday and early Monday.

One of the men killed was a former deputy village headman.

In Yala's Krong Pinang district, former deputy village chief Durohha Mahameng, 52, was gunned down in a driveby shooting as he sat at a roadside teashop early Monday morning. Two gunmen on a motorcycle shot Durohha repeatedly and he died in hospital.

On Sunday night, a Mai Kaen district official, Wanabdulrohim Sritulakarn, 45, was shot dead while running errands in Narathiwat's Yingor district.

Police said two gunmen followed Wanabdulrohim's sedan and shot him twice with a pistol, once in the shoulder and once in the back.

He died from loss of blood, police said.

At about the same time, a vehicle was ambushed in Narathiwat's Bacho district, injuring three soldiers - Sergeant Boontham Maneenoi, Private Boonmee Lomchabarn and Private Boonrit Pengklang.

More than 1,100 people, including police, soldiers, civil servants and villagers have been killed in more than two years of unrest in the three southernmost provinces.
