Blast seriously wounds two marines

Two marines were seriously wounded early yesterday morning when a bomb hidden in a market in Narathiwat's Rusoh district was detonated while they were shopping for food for their unit.

Sergeant Therdthai Thongwan and Private Watchara Biajaras were hospitalised but no information on their condition was available.

No other blast casualties were reported.

In Pattani, a 200-strong military police party was searching for suspected insurgents responsible for shooting a senior police officer to death on Friday.

The team barricaded 10 locations in two tambons in Yarang district in simultaneous raids early in the morning.

An unconfirmed report said three unidentified men had been arrested.

Quoting a crime scene report, Pattani Provincial Police chief Maj-General Korkiat Wongworrachart said 20 spent automatic rifle cartridges were found at the hiding place from where at least two men ambushed Police Lt-Colonel Athipat Kaewhorthong.

A police source said the attack could have been carried out by local militants together with comrades from other districts.

In Ma-Yor district, two suspected subversives on a motorcycle shot and seriously wounded a mailman. In Mai Kaen district, two men shot a rubber tapper, hitting him twice in his right leg.
