Lecturers: PM broke election laws

A group of 60 law lecturers from 14 universities yesterday released an open letter calling for caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to be disqualified from Sunday's election.

The letter alleges Thaksin committed three violations of electoral laws that are grounds for the Election Commission to disqualify him. They claim he mobilised state facilities and services, including a helicopter, while campaigning.

They cited TV news clips aired since the House dissolution on February 24 as evidence. Article 47 of the Elections Act bans officeholders from using state facilities and services for campaigning.

They also alleged Thaksin distributed money to vocational school teachers, citing a report in Matichon newspaper on February 27.
