More botulism patients allowed to return home

Three more patients with clostridium botulinum - a rare and potentially fatal disease - were allowed to go home yesterday.

All 81 botulism patients currently in hospital are also recovering.

"I have received reports that all of the hospitalised botulism patients are well on the way to recovery," Public Health Ministry acting permanent secretary Dr Prat Boonyawongvirot said yesterday.

The outbreak of botulism erupted in Nan on March 14, striking 163 people and prompting the country to import expensive anti-toxin serum for their treatment. About half of them have recovered enough to go home.
