Danai to play in Davis Cup

Thai No 2 Danai Udomchoke has changed his mind and will play for Thailand in the Davis Cup tie against Japan next month, according to the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand (LTAT).
LTAT secretary-general Bunnawit Kengrian revealed yesterday that the veteran Thai Davis Cup player would return to serve his country after previously announcing he planned to skip the tie. "I have talked to Danai recently and he's had a change of heart. He wants to play in the Davis Cup although that might cause some problems for him," said the LTAT executive. According to Bunnawit, Danai's decision to play for the team goes against a deal the player had with his agents, who had arranged a schedule for him to play in tournaments in the US. Danai was determined to enter a series of events in a bid to break into the top 100 in the world so he would be accepted into the main draw of the French Open, instead of having to battle through the qualifying rounds. "His decision is highly appreciated. He sacrificed his goal for the sake of the nation. "We will try to explain this to his agents and find more sponsors for him," he said. Thailand will play Japan in the Zone Asia/Oceania Group I second round tie at the Rama Gardens Hotel from April 7-9. The winning team will be promoted to the World Group Play-offs in September. Danai's change of heart could stem from the fact that he has been in poor form after making four first round exits since January. His confidence has deserted him and he needs a break from professional tournaments.
