Thai cricket wins award

The Lighthouse Phuket International Cricket Sixes yesterday scooped a major award from the International Cricket Council (ICC) for the "Best Spirit of Cricket Initiative" in Asia.

"For the Lighthouse Phuket International Cricket Sixes 2005 to be awarded this major international award is a tremendous achievement for cricket in Phuket," said Michael Maher, chairman of co-organisers the Asian Cricket Sixes Tour.

"The 2005 Sixes contributed in getting the local Phuket tourist economy back on its feet after the tsunami disaster, and helped to let the world know it was safe to travel to Thailand again," added Maher. A record 28 teams from around the world will compete in the annual cricket event next month. The tournament starts on Wednesday, April 12, at Karon Stadium and goes through to Sunday, April 16.
