CM cuts exposure to govt

Spooked by the unpredictable political environment event planner CM Organiser Plc will cut back on the number of government projects it bids on.

Sermkhun Kunawong, chief executive, expects the government to reduce the number of public events it holds this year, which will force the CM Organiser to seek more opportunities in the private sector.

The company will organise only two government events this year: the 60th anniversary celebration of His Majesty the King's coronation and Royal Flora 2006. Both are worth Bt200 million. The rest of its income will come from private-sector events.

The company expects sales of Bt600 million this year, up 7 per cent from sales of Bt561 million last year, Sermkhun said.

Government projects usually generate a lower profit margin compared with private sector projects, which bring an average profit of 35 per cent per event.

Sermkhun said the firm would focus on meetings, incentives events, conferences and exhibitions, which are growing fast thanks to the government's policy to make Thailand a regional meeting hub.
