THAI chief hunt on again

Thai Airways International Plc's selection of a president is likely to face further delays because it wants to look beyond the four inside candidates that made the final cut, a source said yesterday.
"THAI management is prepared to send letters to outsiders who are deemed qualified to lead the national carrier," he said. The process is likely to take time as lengthy discussions are needed, he said.Four of THAI's executives have been short-listed: Chinawut Naressaenee, executive vice president of customer service; Apinan Sumanaseni, executive vice president of operations; Norahuch Ployyai, executive vice president of standards and general administration; and Supachai Limpisvasti, managing director of the technical department. But, all of them have been involved on the technical side, and not finance or management, deemed vital areas given the fierce competition in the airline industry. In February, THAI's board of directors resolved to let Somchainuk Engtrakul stay on as acting president until the end of May. Outgoing president Kanok Abhiradee's four-year term expires at the end of next month. "The extension of the president selection period is a sign that the national carrier prefers to choose an outsider," the source said. Suchat Sritama The Nation
