Business groups await survey results

Thailand's top three business organisations are awaiting the outcome of a survey of their members concerning the current political turmoil and plan to issue a statement soon, the Board of Trade's deputy secretary Pornsilp Patcharintanakul said yesterday.
The three organisations are the Board of Trade, the Federation of Thai Industries and the Thai Bankers Association. Pornsilp said the three organisations distributed a questionnaire to members on March 6 seeking their views on the current political turbulence and the country's economic growth. If all questionnaires are returned before the end of this month, the organisations will issue a statement addressing the political situation. Whatever the respondents say, the three organisations will compose a statement aimed at supporting the country's economic growth amid the political problems, Pornslip said, adding that yesterday's rally at Government House would simply create more confusion. Meanwhile, Centre for International Trade Studies director Aat Pisanwanich said Thailand's economic growth would slow down during the second quarter of the year. A deterioration in the political situation would crimp economic growth, which may even fall below 4 per cent, he said. Petchanet Pratruangkrai, The Nation
