Good times ahead for communications firms

Improved customer-centricity, a flexible, reliable infrastructure and business processes, and the ability to accelerate the delivery of services are three critical factors for Asia Pacific's attempt to successfully transform its communications wing into a next-generation service provider, a communications pundit said yesterday.
"The communications industry in Asia Pacific is poised for significant growth. "Next-generation service providers will lead the way in profitability," said Ash Khalek, vice president of communications and media industry group for Oracle Asia Pacific. "A few key trends and technology developments - such as the emergence of disruptive technologies like voice-over-Internet protocol, the increasing focus on fixed mobile convergence and the push to wireless broadband - are driving unprecedented changes in the industry. "Communications providers have the opportunity to leverage technology and information-driven strategies to transform their businesses," he added. As competition increases, service providers that manage to get a better insight into customer demand before their competitors, stand to gain by enhancing customer satisfaction and boosting trading opportunities, he said. A flexible, standards-based infrastructure is key for service providers, as it enables them to gain business insight, optimise network asset management and business processes, he added. "Successful business transformation has never been achieved on the basis of poor information," said Khalek.
