Thai shrimp: Duty reductions boost exports to EU countries

Thai shrimp exports to European Union countries totalled 11,686 tonnes in 2005, up 46 per cent from 8,001 tonnes in 2004, because of an EU decision to make import duties on Thai shrimp products comparable to those for other shrimp-producing countries.
Thai Shrimp Association president Somsak Paneetatyasai said the EU's import duties on Thai shrimp are now 4.2 per cent for raw products and 7 per cent for cooked and prepared products, comparable to those for Vietnam, Indonesia and India. In the five months from August to December last year, Thailand's shrimp exports to the EU grew by 73 per cent, from 4,233 tonnes to 7,343 tonnes. In 2006, it is expected that the export volume could increase by more than 150 per cent to 30,000 tonnes. Somsak said the EU requires high quality shrimp, which Thailand is able to provide giving it a competitive advantage.
