Warring parties invited to debate

The People's Network for Elections in Thailand yesterday invited the Thai Rak Thai Party and People's Alliance for Democracy to a public debate ahead of the April 2 election.
"The debate is designed to prevent any possible violence that might arise from the tensions between caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and those who demand he resign," said Saiyud Kerdphol, chairman of the poll monitor. After delivering an invitation to Thai Rak Thai legal adviser Chusak Sirinil, Saiyud said Thaksin and two of his closest allies, Khunying Sudarat Keyuraphan and Suriya Jungrungreangkit, should participate in the televised debate. Three key members of the alliance, Chamlong Srimuang, Sondhi Limthongkul and Pipop Thongchai, will be asked to join the debate, which is tentatively scheduled for March 24 at Thammasat University, Saiyud said. Participants could meet on Thursday to set the framework for the debate, he said. Government spokesman Surapong Suebwonglee, however, said he doubted the debate would benefit society or help reconcile rival parties. It might turn out to be a forum for airing differing views without arriving at a conclusion, Surapong said. "The prime minister is ready to meet everyone for talks, but this should not take place while crowds of people are trying to pressure him," he added.
