Young 'need' phones

Almost half of the young people surveyed across the country said cell phones were indispensable and one-third said their day would be incomplete if they did not play a computer game, according to a poll conducted by the Ramjitti Institute and the Culture Ministry.
About one-third, 30.2 per cent, of the male respondents, regularly visit pornographic websites, the survey found. "We have to take steps to ensure the young use technology constructively," Dr Amornwich Nakornthap said yesterday as he announced the survey's findings. Researchers surveyed 3,360 young people in 14 provinces between September and October last year. On average, each one spent Bt384 a month on cell-phone services, Bt500 a month on Internet access, Bt352 a month on computer games and Bt334 on CDs, VCDs and cassettes. Amornwich said many respondents believed cell phones had a negative impact on their lives. "They say the phones have made them impatient, feel lonely, lose sleep and cost them a lot of money," he said. Cell-phone use did not affect academic performance, the survey found.
