Democrats slam govt's 'bullying' letter

The Democrat Party said yesterday that senior Thai Rak Thai Party figures had been cajoling and bullying 30 leading businessmen to publicly support embattled Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Kiat Sithiamorn, a former Democrat party-list MP, said that two days ago a respectable businessman had given him a letter written by government politicians.

He said the letter's tone alternated between coercion and pleading. It asked several leading businessmen to endorse Thaksin by signing a letter of support for his leadership.

The letter also condemned supporters of the call for a royally appointed prime minister, labelling the move as an attempt to destroy democracy.

"The open letter asserts the rampancy of the Thaksinomic system," Kiat said. "Many businessmen are uneasy because they do not want to be involved in politics. Whoever is behind this move must stop," he said.
