Surayud joins "headlight" campaign for peace
Privy councillor Surayud Chulanont was seen arriving at a meeting with his car headlights turned on yesterday, tacitly showŽing his support for dialogue as a means to ending the political turmoil.
A number of motorists in Bangkok and around the country switched on their headlights in a silent gesture to induce negotiaŽtions between caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and his opponents."Well, my headlights are on and I believe talking is the best way to resolve any problem," Surayud said. He was talking to reporters before chairing a meeting on a civic campaign designed to solve the unrest in the deep South. "The relevant parties are all leading figures and are therefore able to think for themselves on what they should do in order to uphold the national interest," he said, ruling out the role of a mediŽator to map out a solution. "It is not in the best interests of the country for the turmoil to perŽsist. Opposing sides should stop causing divisions and start talking to one another," he said. The Nation
