Boycott of Shin products urged

The Consumer Protection Committee yesterday called for a boycott of products and services provided by companies affiliated with Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
The prime targets are products by Shin Corp subsidiaries such as Advanced Info Service, Thai AirAsia and Capital OK, which are being transferred to a Singaporean investment fund. Rossana Kosittrakul, of the committee and the People's Alliance for Democracy, also asked the 100,000 anti-Thaksin protesters gathered at the Sunam Luang rally yesterday to stop paying tax until Thaksin stepped down. She said it was unreasonable to expect Thais to pay tax while Thaksin's family paid nothing on their Bt73.3 billion sell-off of Shin Corp. People who had debts with Capital OK should stop paying their loans, she said. Rossana urged people not to buy Nescafe products or support Charoen Pokphand, owners of the local 7-Eleven franchise, because the two companies had supported Thai Rak Thai. Meanwhile, Paiboon Wattanasiritham, director of Mahidol University's Research Centre for Peace Building, joined the anti-Thaksin movement and met with rally leaders Chamlong Srimuang and Santi Asoke founder Samana Phothirak. Paiboon said Thaksin should leave politics for several years until tensions had eased.
