Suthep: TRT offered me post

Democrat Party secretary-general Suthep Thaugsuban said yesterday the Thai Rak Thai Party had recently tried to woo him to its ranks by offering him the Interior Ministry portfolio.
In return, the ruling party wanted his help to recruit a number of Democrat defectors, he said.Speaking at a party rally in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Suthep claimed he had flatly rejected the offer. "I told Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra that I dare not. I wouldn't have taken [a portfolio] even if I had been offered his job," he said. Suthep said Thai Rak Thai had made a similar bid earlier to woo him into defecting from the Democrat Party, together with other MPs. "They offered us a deal, but nobody took it. All my friends tell me that if I did, I would be cursed and fail in future elections for having been a traitor," he said. Suthep mentioned a former popular Democrat MP who later defected to another party, saying: "Look at that case as an example. After his defection, his campaign rally in the South under the other party's banner was once attended by five people and eight dogs." The Nation
