Mail drop shows lots of govt support

More than 1.36 million postcards have poured into Government House since Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra issued an appeal for messages of peace on Wednesday, officials said yesterday.

Most of the mail supported the embattled prime minister, encouraging him to stay in office despite demands for him to step down.

Many of the cards contained similar messages and handwriting. Most of them had no return address.

Some of the correspondence sent to PO Box 888, Government House, Bangkok 10302 urged the prime minister to resign "as a way to end the ongoing political crisis".

Some of the cards called for a salary rise for civil servants, and others were simply misdirected entries for sweepstakes.

The postcards were put into four one-metre-wide baskets placed on the lawn outside the Thai Khufa Building of Government House.
