TRT supporters set sights on the capital

Thai Rak Thai Party supporters from all around the country are heading to Sanam Luang to hear caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra defend himself at his rally tomorrow.

Groups of supporters from the northern province of Chiang Rai are expected to start travelling to Bangkok today. They should arrive at Sanam Luang by evening and plan to sleep there.

A group calling itself the "Caravan of the Poor" yesterday began walking from the Northeast. It has more than 500 members from Ubon Ratchathani, Amnat Charoen, Buri Ram and Si Sa Ket, who plan to join an assembly of farmers in Nakhon Ratchasima.

The caravan will continue its walk from Nakhon Ratchasima to Bangkok and is expected to arrive in the capital within 20 days.

They are calling for Thaksin to remain in office, so he can continue to solve their problems.

Hundreds of thousands of farmers from the Northeast are expected to arrive in Bangkok by Friday to show support for Thaksin.

Thai Rak Thai supporters in the southern province of Phang Nga are also expected to begin travelling to Bangkok today.

Phang Nga MP Krit Srifa, of the TRT, said they want to show support for Thaksin and demand that he stays in office to continue tackling their problems.
