Indians sizzle but South Korea take overall crown

[ARCHERY] Korea yesterday stamped their superiority on the Asian Grand Prix Archery Tournament first leg at the Hua Mark Archery Range, capturing 12 medals including five gold in three days.
The Korean archers made a clean sweep of the four gold medals on offer in the women’s recurve events (70m, 70-arrow individual shoot-out, 70m Olympic round event, team shoot-out and Olympic round event) over the three days. A total of four gold medals were up for grabs yesterday. India claimed two gold while Japan and Korea took the remaining two. An Se Jin, who won her first two gold on the opening day in the 70m, 70-arrow women’s recurve individual and the women’s team events, teamed up with Jung Hyun Ok and Kim Mun Joung to win Korea’s lone gold yesterday in the women’s recurve Olympic round team event. The Koreans put it across Taiwan 247-238 in the final round. Japan finished third with an aggregate score of 225 points. Japan, powered by the Athens Olympic silver medallist Yamamoto Hiroshi, clinched the men’s recurve team gold by shooting 248 points. Korea and Taiwan came second and third with scores of 247 and 248 points respectively. India’s two gold medals came from the men’s and women’s compound team events. Their men’s squad captured the crown after powering past Iran 250-239 in the final clash. Malaysia had to be content with the bronze after shooting 250 points. The Indian women’s team also stole the show with their awesome performance, crushing Indonesia 249-237 in the final. Burma picked up the bronze with 223 points. At the end of the three-day meet yesterday, Korea emerged overall winners with their 12 medals, including the five gold. India claimed five gold but collected only one silver and two bronze to finish second. Iran (2-2-0) and last year’s overall champions Japan (2-1-4) finished third and fourth places respectively, while hosts Thailand collected one gold and one silver, both medals from Narissara Tinbua, to come in fifth place.
