Thai Rak Thai to sue rallies’ ringleaders

The Thai Rak Thai Party’s legal team is scrutinising recordings of the two Royal Plaza anti-Thaksin protests with the aim of taking action against their leaders.

Thai Rak Thai party list MP Wichit Plangsriskul said the team would finish watching the DVDs tomorrow and would then start analysing the content to decide whether anyone in the government or the ruling party was defamed. He said the 12 DVDs had been specially recorded by Thai Rak Thai Party members.

“We found that speakers on the stage used harsh words, which could be construed as defamatory to the government, he said. We also found that one speech intended to overthrow the government and the Constitution and that could violate the Constitution and criminal law.

The party will surely file suits against some of protesters, he said.

Wichit said he would write to the Election Commission about the deputy leader of a party who was involved in protests at both Lumpini Park and the Royal Plaza.

He or she took the stage and mobilised people to join the protest, he said. That could be considered violating the Political Party Act, for which the punishment is dissolution of the party.

Meanwhile, groups of journalists yesterday sought protection from anti-Thaksin protesters in a letter to their industry associations.

Copies of the letter were handed to the Association of Broadcast Journalists of Thailand and the Association of Photojournalists of Thailand. It claimed some protesters at the anti-Thaksin rallies at the Royal Plaza on February 4 and 11 threatened and spoke rudely to TV reporters covering the events.

Some of them tried to taunt the reporters, which could have ended in violence. It made us feel unsafe carrying out our job, the letter read, adding that speakers on stage tried to provoke the audience against the media.

We feel daunted because some people want to make our job a political matter, the letter read. We also feel insecure, as we have to cover the story in the field. We hope you [the associations] might find some measures to protect us.
